Wisconsin CWD Watch Discussion Forum

Welcome to the new CWD Watch Journal. Readers of the Wisconsin CWD Watch website will undoubtedly be aware there are decided "positions" taken on a number of issues related to Chronic Wasting Disease and in particular the manner in which the Wisconsin DNR has responded to the discovery of the disease among some of Wisconsin whitetail deer.

In Wisconsin, news reporting on CWD has been filtered and managed to greatly narrow the range of information available to the public. The purpose of this blog is to broaden the CWD discussion to allow consideration of alternative theories, models, and approaches to confronting this disease. The observers posting on this forum offer information gleaned from a variety of sources - internet news reporting, scientific and technical journals, collegial associations with natural resources professionals, and contacts with people who are directly affected by CWD and its response by the natural resources bureaucracy in Wisconsin.

New Quick CWD test may be available to hunters

Hunters in Wisconsin who have had to wait months for CWD test results from the DNR testing system, may have an instant test available to them by next fall.

Prion Developmental Laboratories (PDL). PDL has notified that it is in the final stages of validation approval for its Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) strip test.

E. Greg McCartney, Chairman and CEO of GBI, stated, "PDL's strip test for CWD is positioned to lead the way in assuring the public that the deer and elk meat it is consuming is safe. Results can be achieved easily and accurately in both laboratories and in the field. The principles of the CWD and BSE tests developed by PDL are the same and we are anticipating positive conclusions from the advancements of both tests."

While this is good news, I am worried that DNR will try to capture administration of these tests so they can continue to control when positive CWD results are released to hunters and the general public.
